Trust the Dots to Connect
Following your heart matters more than figuring it out
There's a profound magic in understanding that our lives are not linear narratives, but intricate landscapes of seemingly random moments. Yesterday, Steve Jobs' Stanford commencement came across my timeline. The address isn't just a speech, it's an ode to understanding how these random experiences weave themselves into meaningful journeys. It’s something I’ve been pondering for awhile now, and that video coming across my feed felt like a call to my inner world.
When Jobs spoke about connecting dots backward, he wasn't offering empty motivation, but a deeply personal philosophy of trust. Imagine life as an extraordinary tapestry, where each thread, no matter how frayed or unexpected, contributes to a larger, more beautiful design. We cannot see the full pattern while we're weaving, but that doesn't make the process any less miraculous.
This is the essence of trusting ones heart. Recognizing that what appears as detour or disruption might actually be precisely the route you're meant to travel. Our culture obsesses with planned trajectories, with predetermined success metrics. But the most transformative journeys are rarely predictable. They're organic, wild, sometimes painful, but always rich with potential.
Spiritual decay doesn't come from uncertainty, but from refusing to listen to your inner voice. When we suppress our genuine desires, when we conform to external expectations, we slowly disconnect from our authentic selves. Jobs understood this profoundly. His Stanford speech was less about success and more about staying true to an internal compass.
Our desires are not random. They are coded messages from our deeper selves, invitations to explore territories of potential. We want things not because they represent external validation, but because they resonate with some unspoken inner truth. Desire is the language of possibility, a conversation between who we are and who we might become.
This doesn't mean every choice will feel perfect. Some dots take years to connect, some experiences will feel like painful detours. But that's the beauty of trust, it's not about guaranteeing smooth sailing, but about maintaining faith during turbulent waters.
Self-reflection, or connecting the dots in this case, is the luxury for those with unrelenting trust in themselves, the indulgence of someone who has clawed their way to the summit and finally has the vantage point to make sense of the madness. When the climb is over and you’re standing at the zenith, the spoils before you will dazzle, richer and more abundant than you ever dared to expect. But the real revelation isn’t in what lies ahead, it’s in what lies behind. Only then does the tapestry of your journey reveal its brutal precision, its undeniable logic.
You’ll see that none of it was random. Not the failures, not the betrayals, not even the moments you thought would undo you. The heartbreaks weren’t accidents; they were offerings. Relationships you sabotaged, bridges you torched, lives you touched only to fracture. They were all deliberate sacrifices to some higher mission you only half-understood at the time. Every wound, self-inflicted or otherwise, fed the machine that kept you moving. You were surgeon and patient, slashing deeper even as you tried to heal, because you knew that staying wounded was better than stagnating in comfort.
At the end, you realize it was all needed along the way. The map was always there, etched in the rubble of your decisions, though you never saw it until the end. And this is why Jobs’ words resonate so deeply: the dots only connect in hindsight. Life refuses to make sense while you’re living it. The chaos feels random, the pain purposeless. But when you look back, you see how every wrong turn led you to the right place.
This is why you must trust yourself in the moment, even when the moment feels unbearable. The pieces only align when the journey is complete. Reflection can only serve you once the performance is over, once the applause is yours and the curtain drops. Until then, the only mandate is to keep going, to embrace the absurdity, to let life remain messy and unresolved.
Self-reflection is for the end. But trust? That’s for right now.
So stay in the game. Not because success is promised, but because the game itself is where transformation happens. Trust that your experiences are not random, but are quietly assembling themselves into a narrative more beautiful and complex than you could currently imagine.
The dots will connect. Not through force or calculation, but through a kind of grace that emerges when we surrender to the journey.
Keep moving. Keep trusting. The best is always in the becoming.
